The Toyota GR Supra is still a fresh new car. Although its Detroit debut was over a year ago, it just feels like yesterday. However, that’s not necessarily a reason for the car to not get some updates for the North American market.
To begin with, Toyota is introducing the GR Supra A91 Edition, limited to 1,000 units. It’ll have the 3.0-litre in-line 6-cylinder engine and will be available in a choice of two colors: Nocturnal or Refraction; the latter is exclusive to the A91 Edition.
The special edition also gets a rear black carbon fibre lip spoiler, matte black wheels, C-pillar graphics and carbon fibre mirror caps. The black Alcantara leather-trimmed interior with blue contrast is likewise exclusive to this limited edition model, and each A91 Edition will come with two exclusive key gloves and trunk mat.
All Supra models for 2021 will feature an 8.8-inch touchscreen that is standard on the 2020 3.0 Premium model; the base model’s 6.5-inch screen has been discontinued.
On the 2021 Supra 3.0 Premium and A91 Edition, the front Brembo brake calipers are painted red and feature a ‘TOYOTA Supra’ logo. The 2021 models are expected to start arriving at Toyota dealers in June.
Few people including Car Throttle have already demonstrated that the 3.0L engine actually makes a lot more (376+ bhp) than what Toyota had officially quoted. Now, for the 2021 model, the official figures for the 3.0L engine are 382 bhp and 368 lb-ft (499 Nm) of torque.
The increased output results from a slew of upgrades throughout the engine. The new dual-branch exhaust manifold, with six ports instead of two, improves heat management. A new piston design reduces the engine’s compression ratio from 11:1 to 10.2:1.
The 2021 Supra is also offered with a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged unit with 255 bhp and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque. Both the 3.0L and 2.0L engines are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
The Safety and Technology Package for MY21 will be available on the 2.0 and 3.0 grades. The package includes Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (full speed), Blind Spot Monitor (BSM), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Parking Sensors with Emergency Braking Function, Navigation, 12-speaker 500-watt JBL audio system, Wireless Apple CarPlay, and Supra Connected Services.
