Along with the Clarity FCEV, Honda has updated the Clarity PHEV too for the Model Year 2020. In the U.S., the standard model is priced at $33,400 while the Touring trim costs $36,600. The Clarity PHEV qualifies for a federal tax rebate of up to $7,500.
New for 2020 is an updated Acoustic Vehicle Alert System (AVAS) that alerts pedestrians, bicyclists and other road users when the car is operating at low speeds on electric power only.
The Clarity PHEV comes standard with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay & Android Auto compatibility, heated front seats, rain-sensing wipers, and the Honda Sensing suite of safety and driver-assistive technologies.
Clarity Touring adds Ultrasuede interior accents, perforated leather seats, 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with 2-position memory, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and navigation with charging infrastructure information.
Two-motor hybrid technology
The Clarity PHEV’s powertrain comprises of a 1.5-litre Atkinson cycle 4-cylinder gasoline engine coupled to a Starter Generator and an electric motor. The motor at the rear axle puts out 181 hp and 232 lb.-ft. (315 Nm) of torque, drawing juice from a 17 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The total system output is 212 hp.
Its all-electric range is claimed to be 47 miles or 75 km. Drivers can choose between Normal, Econ and Sport modes to prioritize efficiency or performance, while the HV mode maintains the battery’s state of charge.
When using the gasoline engine, Clarity received 44/40/42 mpg EPA fuel economy ratings (city/highway/combined), and a 340 mile (547 km) EPA total driving range rating.
