BMW of North America is recalling certain Z4 models and 2020 Toyota Supra units over the possibility of headlight control units failing and causing a loss of one or both of the headlights. The company suspects a total of 214 units to be affected.

According to the documents from NHTSA, the models include the Z4 sDrive30i, Z4 M40i, and of course, the 2020 Toyota Supra with 177 units suspected to be having a defective headlamp control unit. BMW will notify the owners and dealers to replace the control units free of charge. However, the owners may also contact the respective customer service numbers (1-800-525-7417 for BMW, 1-888-270-9371 for Toyota).

The affected Z4 models were produced between July 16, 2019 – August 20, 2019, while the Supras were produced between July 15, 2019 – July 25, 2019.

One of the documents describes that the printed circuit board (PCB) of potentially affected headlamp control unit(s) may have experienced a process issue during supplier production. Specifically, during an alignment process of the PCBs, a centering pin may have inadvertently contained foreign object debris. This could cause the left and/or right headlamp(s) to experience a loss of function.

When this happens, it would affect the headlamp illumination and turn-signal functionality as well. A message in the instrument cluster alerts the driver and there’ll be an audible clicking sound regarding the turn signal.

On Nov 20, 2019, BMW decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall.
