I had to check several times and different sources to make sure that the Tesla Cybertruck reveal presentation was not a joke. This is indeed the real, near-production prototype of a Tesla pickup truck that is now accepting orders with prices starting at $39,900 for Single Motor RWD version.

As for the design, well, the internet has strong opinions on the Cybertruck, naturally. Another funny comment suspects that the main designer might be on vacation.

Or perhaps, Elon saw the designer working on a 3D model and while it was still in its initial stages of getting sculpted, he just said “stop! stop right there! this is it!!”.

But really, what has happened is that they’ve sent the rule book to the Mars. Jokes aside, the Cybertruck is a real thing. Apparently, it is inspired by the movie Blade Runner. The bed can accommodate an ATV as demonstrated in the picture above and also during the presentation ceremony. Thanks to adjustable air suspension and a ramp-like gate, loading an ATV is easy. There’s also a charging port in the bed to plug-in the ATV.

Tesla says that the body panels are made from Ultra-Hard 30X Cold-Rolled stainless-steel which is dent and damage proof, and the windows are Tesla Armor glass.

Above is a short video by Metal Supermarkets that might help understand the Cold-Rolled steel.

As with the exteriors, I don’t have any serious comment on the Cybertruck’s interiors. It appears to have enough space for 5 adults. The touchscreen over there measures 17-inches. Standard features include the Autopilot. As you might have noticed, there are no traditional ORVMs and I can’t seem to find the cameras and displays either.

Still, a lot of questions remain unanswered. Such as “what about the pedestrian compliance?” If this really is the final shape of the production vehicle, the Cybertruck can be a brilliant marketing tool, a moving billboard, considering the fact that it has flat sides.

As for the technical bits, Tesla claims 3,500 lbs (1,588 kg) payload and 14,000+ lbs (6,350 kg) towing capacity (Tri Motor AWD), 100 cu.ft. (2,832 litres) of exterior locakable storage, and up to 16-inches of ground clearance. The approach and departure angles are 35° and 28°, respectively.

The Single Motor RWD, Dual Motor AWD, and Tri Motor AWD ranges are claimed to be 250+ miles (402 km), 300+ miles (483 km), and 500+ miles (805 km), respectively. The latter is the quickest too with a 0 – 60 mph (96.5 km/h) acceleration time of <2.9 seconds.

The Dual Motor AWD and Tri Motor AWD are priced at $49,900 and $69,900, respectively. Production begins in late 2021 with Tri Motor AWD in late 2022.
