Daimler’s smart marque has updated the electric variants of fortwo and forfour city cars, with refreshed design and technology. Both the new EQ fortwo and EQ forfour models now have different front ends for the first time.
Both models also ditch the emblem logo on the exterior, replacing it with the word logo. Buyers can opt for full-LED headlamps with three active LED elements; they also greet the driver with an animation upon unlocking the vehicle. As for the wheels, there are four new rim designs with diameters of 15- or 16-inches.
Inside, there’s an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The smart EQ control app enables the drivers to retrieve the status of their vehicle remotely and set the climate control before entering the vehicle. The same functionalities can also be done via an Apple Watch.
There are multiple packages available too. The Premium package includes a panoramic roof or rather a draught stop on the fortwo cabrio, a reversing camera and a stowage net at the centre console. The top-of-the-range Exclusive package, which in addition to the Premium, gets Full-LED lights at the front and rear as well as a sensor package comprising rain and light sensor, fog lamps with cornering light function, ambient lighting in the interior and an automatically dimming inside rearview mirror.
The electric motor at the rear of all three variants develops a maximum of 60 kW (82 metric hp) and 160 Nm (118 lb-ft) of torque. However, the continuous output is 41 kW (56 metric hp). The smart EQ fortwo is claimed to get a range of up to 159 km/98 mi (NEDC), and it is also claimed to be the quickest among the three with a 0-100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration time of 11.6 seconds. The top speed on all three models is 130 km/h (81 mph).
The lithium-ion battery pack is made by Daimler-owned Deutsche Accumotive; it consists of three HV modules and a total of 96 HV cells, and has a capacity of 17.6 kWh.
With the optional 22 kW on-board charger (4.6 kW standard), the new models are claimed to get charged from 10% to 80% range in just under 40 minutes if three-phase charging is possible. According to Daimler, the smart charges enough for an average daily driving distance in a little over 3.5 hours at a 230V socket.
