The BMW X1 has now got a plug-in hybrid sibling in the form of X1 xDrive25e, which combines a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor.

Speaking of which, the petrol engine puts out 92 kW (125 hp) and a maximum torque of 225 Nm, paired to a 6-speed Steptronic transmission that drives the front wheels. The electric motor generates 70 kW (95 hp) and 165 Nm of torque, and drives the rear wheels via a single-speed transmission. The system output, however, is 162 kW or 220 hp and the maximum system torque is 385 Nm.

A 0 – 100 km/h acceleration is claimed to happen in 7.0 seconds and the top speed is 192 km/h. The pure-electric top speed is 135 km/h. The 9.7 kWh lithium-ion battery pack is claimed to offer a pure-electric range of up to 57 km (NEDC). The range as per WLTP is 50 km.

BMW said that the high-voltage battery can be charged at conventional household sockets using the standard charging cable. The battery is claimed to get fully charged in around 5 hours this way. With i Wallbox, the charging operation takes less than 3.6 hours. The charging socket is located under a separate flap on the front left fender of the car.

The xDrive25e defaults to Auto eDrive as standard. Navigation data is also used to manage the plug-in hybrid system to increase efficiency. When the navigation guidance is activated, the anticipatory energy management takes the route profile into account for controlling the drive system.

There’s also MAX eDrive mode for maximum use of the electric drive, and Save Battery mode enables the driver to maintain the charging state of the battery while driving or to increase it via recuperation. In this way, the battery capacity can be saved for pure electric mode later in the city for example.

The xDrive25e features acoustic pedestrian protection as standard. When driving electrically at speeds of up to 30 km/h, a sound designed specifically for electrified BMW models is generated to alert other road users. Other features of the plug-in hybrid model includes 17-inch light-alloy wheels, 2-zone automatic air conditioning as well as auxiliary air conditioning. The interior can be pre-conditioned remotely via BMW Connected using a smartphone.
