Audi has updated the A5 lineup with minor design changes and new onboard technology. The updated models include the A5 Coupé, A5 Cabriolet, A5 Sportback, S5 Coupé, S5 Cabriolet, and S5 Sportback.
The design updates are rather subtle. However, the updates make the cars look even more sharper. The Singleframe honeycomb grille is flatter and a bit wider. There are tiny slits above the grille reminiscent of the classic Audi Sport quattro from 1984; something we first saw on the new A1. The front bumper features large air intakes and at the rear, a diffuser insert with trapezoidal tailpipes makes the car look wider.
All A5 variants roll off the assembly line with LED headlights as standard, while the buyers can opt for Matrix LED headlights with LED taillamps featuring dynamic turn signals. As always, the S5 variants pack a touch more sex appeal. There are advanced and S line optional packages. Buyers have 12 paint finishes to choose from, including the new District Green metallic.
A5 Cabriolet
Interiors get a new 10.1-inch MMI touch system with acoustic feedback, replacing the rotary pushbutton of the previous models. Other features include natural-language voice control, Audi connect services (includes traffic light information), 12.3-inch Audi virtual cockpit plus, Wi-Fi hotspot, and Bang & Olufsen Premium Sound System with 3D sound. Options include MMI navigation plus, and digital Audi connect key that turns an Android smartphone into a vehicle key that can unlock the doors and start the engine as well.
A5 Cabriolet
The A5 and S5 Cabriolet’s roof opens in 15 seconds and can be operated at speeds of up to 50 km/h. With the top up, the trunk has a volume of 370 liters (13.1 cu-ft); the split rear seatbacks can be folded forward.
As for the suspension, Audi says that the standard tuning is sporty, yet comfortable. A sport suspension and a suspension with controlled damping are available as options; the latter is integrated into the Audi drive select dynamic handling system, which comes as standard depending on the engine variant.
At launch, four A5 engine variants will be equipped with a mild-hybrid system. A belt alternator starter, which is connected to the crankshaft, recovers the energy during deceleration and stores it in a lithium-ion battery. The system also shuts down the engine when the driver lifts off of the accelerator to save fuel; start/stop happens at high speeds.
All A5 models come with an automatic transmission, either a 7-speed S tronic or an 8-speed tiptronic. quattro drive is available as an option for the mid-range engine variants and comes standard with the three most powerful ones.
S5 Coupé TDI
The S5 TDI (diesel) models pack a 3.0L V6 under the hood, producing 255 kW (347 hp) and 700 Nm of torque. It gets an electric compressor, supporting the turbocharger. An 8-speed tiptronic and permanent quattro all-wheel drive transfer the power in the S5 Sportback and S5 Coupé. An S sport suspension is standard; damper control is optional.
Audi is offering the S5 Coupé and the S5 Sportback with a 3.0L TFSI V6 in markets outside Europe. The turbocharged gasoline direct injection engine has an output of 260 kW (354 hp) and a torque of 500 Nm (368.8 lb-ft) from 1,370-4,500 rpm. The V6 is claimed to propel the S5 Coupé TFSI from 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in 4.7 seconds and on to an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155.3 mph).
The base price in Germany for the A5 Coupé 40 TFSI (140 kW/190 hp) is €42,900. The models will be with dealers starting in early 2020.
