It is starting to look like the SUV-Cabriolets will take the same route as the Coupe-SUVs; there were barely any options for the latter once upon a time and now the list is endless. As for the SUV-Cabriolets, there is Murano CrossCabriolet, and of course, the other one that comes to our mind is the Evoque Convertible. There is an open-top Hyundai Santa Fe and the Sunroq too, but they’re one-off concepts.
Volkswagen had confirmed to produce a convertible version of the T-Roc SUV in February last year, and it is now (almost) ready to join the list. As with other available SUV-Cabriolets, the T-Roc Cabriolet too has two doors on the side.
VW still calls it a “near production concept car”
The classic soft-top roof opens in 9 seconds and can be operated when the car is in motion as well, at speeds of up to 30 km/h. The soft-top unlocks and locks electromechanically.
As for safety, the Cabriolet occupants are guarded by a roll-over protection system that extends behind the rear seats. The system springs upwards in the area of the rear headrests within a fraction of a second, in response to exceeding a defined lateral acceleration or vehicle tilt, VW said. In addition, there’s a reinforced windscreen frame and other structural modifications in order to ensure maximum safety.
Inside, the T-Roc Cabriolet gets more or less the same features as the regular T-Roc SUV. Features include an optional 8.0-inch MIB3 infotainment system with an integrated eSIM for online connectivity and an optional 11.7-inch Active Info Display.
Buyers have Style and R-Line packages to choose from, with the latter offering a more sporty look. The R-Line also offers standard fog lights, sports-tuned running gear, and progressive steering with speed-dependent steering control.
At launch, the T-Roc Cabriolet will be available with two TSI (turbo) petrol engines with an output of 85 kW (115 hp) and 110 kW (150 hp), respectively. The 1.0-litre 3-cylinder engine is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission as standard, while the 1.5-litre 4-cylinder engine gets an option of a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. Power is sent to the front wheels.
The T-Roc Cabriolet will make its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September this year, and the market launch will happen in spring 2020.
