According to media reports, Nissan will be laying off more than 1,700 employees in India, as part of its plans to cut more than 10,000 jobs globally. The India subsidiary had announced the Employee Voluntary Separation Scheme last year in order to cut costs.
Nissan India has been struggling to keep up with the competition and the newest launch Kicks too has failed to impress the buyers here. The Datsun brand which was introduced in the country as a low-cost brand in 2014, isn’t helping either. It is being reported that the brand today sells less than some of the luxury car brands in India.
Renault, which owns 43% stake in Nissan, currently offers only 4 vehicles in India with sales mostly coming from Kwid and Duster.
