October 2020 update: Hyundai Kona EV recalled over faulty battery cells
Jan 2020 update: In an email response, a spokesperson from Hyundai Canada said that the case is still under review by Transport Canada.
A Hyundai Kona electric has allegedly exploded inside a residential garage in Île-Bizard, Canada, on Friday. Apparently, the explosion sent the garage door flying across the street.

Owner Piero Cosentino told CBC that he had purchased the car in March. After seeing dark clouds of smoke coming from his garage on Friday afternoon, he immediately turned off the breaker. Firefighters were called to the scene at around 1 PM and were able to put out the blaze. No one was injured in the incident. He also tells the reporter that the car was not being charged and wasn’t even plugged in.

Typical of a modern electric vehicle, the Kona Electric‘s lithium-ion battery pack is mounted on the floor, and is equipped with a Thermal Management system. There’ll be a heating element for preconditioning the battery for efficient operation. Thanks to telematics, batteries of electric cars these days can be pre-heated via a mobile app.
At this point, it is not yet known what could have caused the alleged fire/explosion in Cosentino’s car. This seems to be the first and only known incident involving a Kona Electric. According to electrek, it was extremely hot in Montreal on Saturday due to a strong heatwave.
Louise Desrosiers of Montreal’s fire service told CBC that there didn’t seem to be any other factors inside the garage that could have caused the explosion.
