The delicious-looking French sports car Alpine A110 has received a new variant called A110 S, with visual and technical upgrades, which positions the A110 S on top of the Pure and Légende variants.
The optional Gris Tonnerre paint in a matte finish is exclusive to the A110 S. Other exterior touches include a flag on the B-pillar in carbon fibre and orange; black Alpine script across the rear; orange brake calipers and version-specific GT Race wheels with a dark finish. The options list also includes a gloss carbon fibre roof which reduces the car’s overall weight by 1.9 kg (4.2 lbs), and lightweight Fuchs forged alloy wheels.
The Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres measure 215/40 on the front axle and 245/40 at the rear. 320 mm discs with Brembo calipers (4-piston front, single-piston rear) are fitted as standard; optionally available on other versions of the A110.
Inside, orange stitching replaces the signature blue stitching found in other versions of the A110. There is black Dinamica upholstery for the roof lining, sun visors and door panels. The Sabelt seats are also trimmed in Dinamica and weigh 13.1 kg (29 lbs) each. The steering wheel is wrapped in leather and Dinamica with an orange 12 o’clock marking and contrast stitching.
Aluminum footrest and pedals, and carbon fibre trim elements further distinguish the A110 S from other variants.
Powering the A110 S is the same 1.8-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, however, the boost pressure is up by 0.4 bar or 5.8 psi. As a result, the output is now 292 metric hp (+40 hp) at 6,400 rpm while the torque of 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) is available from 2,000 rpm to 6,400 rpm (+1,400 rpm). The 7-speed DCT sends power to the rear wheels.
The A110 S’s power-to-weight ratio is 3.8 kg/hp compared to the other versions’ 4.3 kg/hp. All these figures make the A110 S 0.1 second quicker (0-100 km/h in 4.4 seconds) than the other models. The top speed appears to be limited to the same 250 km/h (155 mph).
The objective was to intensify the engine’s character and power delivery. The A110 S is characterized by high-speed stability and handling precision, and it was important to mirror those distinctive dynamic traits with the car’s powertrain as well – Jean-Pascal Dauce, Chief Engineer, Alpine. Between 5,000 and 7,000 rpm the engine is especially energetic. It continues to push forward even at those very high engine speeds, which really encourages you to stretch every gear all the way out.
The new coil springs are stiffer by 50% and the dampers have been tuned accordingly. The anti-roll bars – hollow to minimize weight – are firmer by 100%, Alpine said. The ride height has also been lowered by 4 mm. The ESC has been reconfigured as well, specifically for the Track mode; the system can still be fully disengaged. A brake-based e-differential system is present too, for sharp cornering with minimal wheelspin.
The car weighs 1,114 kg (2,456 lbs) unladen, which is 16 kg (35 lbs) more than the Pure and 9 kg (20 lbs) lighter than the Légende.
Priced at €66,500 before options.
