The John Cooper Works versions of the 2019 MINI Clubman and Countryman are now the most powerful models ever in the brand’s 60-year history. Besides increased power, both models have received other upgrades too.
The 2.0-litre 4-cylinder TwinPower Turbo petrol engine now puts out 225 kW (306 hp) between 5000 and 6250 rpm, and 450 Nm of torque between 1750 and 4500 rpm. The increased output of 75 hp and 130 Nm comes courtesy of a bigger turbocharger. The compression ratio of the engine has been reduced from 10.2 to 9.5, to match the increased system charging pressure. There’s also the latest generation of direct petrol injection, where the new multi-hole fuel injectors arranged between the valves enable an increased flow rate, transporting the fuel to the combustion chambers under an injection pressure of up to 350 bar.
The resulting pulling power enables the new John Cooper Works Clubman to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, while the figure for the new John Cooper Works Countryman is 5.1 seconds. Top speed, however, is electronically limited to 250 km/h.
An 8-speed Steptronic sports transmission sends power to all four wheels via the All4 AWD system. The transmission has been integrated with a mechanical differential lock on the front axle. Under load conditions, it generates a locking effect of up to 39 percent. The diff lock is interconnected with the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), which aids in traction on loose terrain or in poor weather conditions.

There’s a new exhaust system as well, with the external diameter of the tailpipe trims being 95 mm for the new JCW Clubman and 85 mm for the new JCW Countryman.
The chassis has been tweaked as well. The model-specific versions of the single-joint spring-strut-type axle for the front wheel and the multi-joint rear axle were optimized in terms of their component rigidity, kinematics and weight, to create a thrilling racing sensation, the company said. Newly designed swivel bearings enable improved camber values on the front wheels.
Optionally for both models, there is also an adaptive chassis with electronically controlled dampers. In the new JCW Clubman, both the standard sport chassis and the adaptive chassis enable the vehicle to be lowered by 10 mm.
Part of the standard equipment is the 18-inch John Cooper Works light metal wheels in Black Grip Spoke design; 19-inch sizes are also optionally available. The sport brake system has also been redesigned and now contains 4-piston, fixed-caliper disc brakes on the rear wheels; the discs measure 360 × 30 mm at the front and 330 × 20 mm at the rear.
More features include LED headlights with Matrix high beam function, LED taillights in Union Jack design, a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, JCW sports seats with integrated headrests, JCW sport steering wheel with multifunction buttons, JCW selector lever, and the anthracite headliner. The options list includes Connected Navigation Plus with an 8.8-inch touch display and Real-Time Traffic Information service.
