Hyundai is busy testing the all-electric version of Kona SUV in India, expected to be launched in the country in July – August period. The Kona made its global debut in July 2017 and the Kona EV about six months later.
The EV was showcased in India at The Global Mobility Summit 2018, in New Delhi, suggesting the launch plans in the market. In the international markets where the Kona EV is already on sale, there are two battery packs to choose from – 39.2 kWh and 64 kWh; the former offers a range of 290 km while the latter about 450 km, as per official testing procedures.
In the UK, the Kona EV (39 kWh battery, 136 hp) retails at £30,000 (including VAT), which is about Rs 26.5 lakh in Indian money. Hyundai had announced last year that their Chennai facility is capable of producing EVs as well, meaning the Kona EV should be available for Indians at a reasonable price. However, there is no denying the fact that the Kona EV will become a niche product in the country.
