Time and again, it has been proven that there is no actual rivalry in the automotive industry. Everyone needs someone for something; be it for a joint development or a charging network, or maybe just to borrow some engines.
Some companies have got such good marketing/PR teams that can change the way one perceives a brand in just a few minutes, with a simple yet impressive video. One such is from BMW bidding farewell to Dieter Zetsche as he steps down from his positions (Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars) this month.
The video starts with Zetsche (a lookalike) getting up from his seat and entering what appears to be the reception area of the building, smiling and waving at his colleagues. He then hands over his badge/ID, obliges to selfie requests from other employees, and gets into an S-Class to be chauffeured back home. Once the chauffeur departs, Zetsche’s garage door opens and he drives off in a BMW i8.
Thanks @BMW for the kind suggestion – but we’re 100% sure he already decided to #switchtoEQ 😉 https://t.co/M6lYL1dmR2

Of course, it’s not the first time that both companies have showcased a great sportsmanship. Mercedes-Benz congratulated BMW when it turned 100 in 2016, with a witty video, and invited BMW employees to visit the museum in Stuttgart.

Zetsche is taking a break of two years, a “cooling-off” period, before returning to Daimler as the Chairman of the Supervisory Board in 2021 once Manfred Bischoff’s term of office as Chairman of the Supervisory Board expires at that time.
