Under the new ownership of PSA Group, Opel has revealed the 6th generation Corsa hatchback. The brand’s popular model has been revealed as an electric vehicle first, which will be followed by regular diesel and petrol versions.

There are significant changes in the design language compared with the outgoing model. While the compact exterior dimensions of previous generations are retained, the coupe-like roofline is 48 mm lower than its predecessor’s. The driver sits 28 mm lower as well, which is intended to benefit handling and driving dynamics from the low centre of gravity.

As part of safety technologies, Opel is offering adaptive, glare-free IntelliLux LED matrix light. The eight LED elements, controlled by a high-resolution front camera continuously adapt the light beam to the prevailing traffic situation and the surroundings.

The interior layout too has been completely redone and looks more on the premium side with the usage of materials. The centre section of the dashboard has been slightly angled towards the driver. Features include Multimedia Navi with a 7.0-inch touchscreen or Multimedia Navi Pro with a 10.0-inch touchscreen, Opel Connect telematics service, Live Navigation with real-time traffic information, roadside assistance and emergency call. Also, notice a digital instrument cluster with Navigation information being displayed.

Radar-supported adaptive speed control and sensor-based flank guard celebrate their premiere in the new Corsa. Side blind-spot assist and a variety of parking assistants are also available.

Moving on to the business end of the story, the new Opel Corsa-e offers 100 kW (136 metric hp) of power and a maximum torque of 260 Nm (192 lb-ft), propelling the EV from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.1 seconds. A sprint from 0-50 km/h (31 mph) takes 2.8 seconds, apparently.

The 50 kWh battery pack is good for a range of 330 km (205 mi) as per WLTP. As for charging, Opel says that the battery can be charged to 80% of its capacity in 30 minutes, and is prepared for all charging options – via cable, wallbox or high-speed charging – and the battery is covered by an 8-year warranty. The state-of-charge can be checked with the myOpel app.

The driver has Normal, Eco and Sport modes to choose from. As it would suggest, the Sport mode increases responsiveness and driving dynamics, with a moderate loss of driving range. According to the company, the Eco mode is where the Corsa-e becomes a long-distance runner, significantly increasing the range.
