The Ford Puma was a sporty coupe that had a short production run in Europe from 1997 – 2002. Ford has decided to revive the nameplate, this time for a crossover that’ll go on sale at the end of this year.
The teaser doesn’t tell us much besides the GT-inspired DRLs, and it also appears to have a Coupe-SUV-like sloping roofline. “Innovatively engineered and seductively styled, we think Puma is going to really resonate with compact car customers in Europe. If you want a car that can turn heads on Friday night, and swallow your flat-pack furniture with ease on Saturday afternoon, then you’ve found it,” said Stuart Rowley, President, Ford of Europe.
According to Ford, the Puma will have a class-leading luggage capacity of 456 litres. There’ll also be an innovative rear stowage solution that provides a deep, versatile storage compartment that is capable of comfortably accommodating two golf bags in an upright position.
As for the business end, a 1.0‑litre 3-cylinder EcoBoost petrol engine will be combined with a 48V mild-hybrid system that comprises of a belt-driven integrated starter/generator (BISG). The Puma will offer about 155 hp.
The new Puma will be produced at Ford’s Craiova Assembly Plant, Romania.
