Maruti Suzuki has introduced a new, in-house developed 1.5-litre DDiS 225 diesel engine for the new Ciaz. Before you feel sad for the Fiat-sourced 1.3L, worry not. It’ll continue to be offered at least for some more time, as letting go of the legendary “National Engine” of India is not so easy.
The new 1,498 cc diesel motor produces 70 kW or 95 hp at 4,000 rpm and a peak torque of 225 Nm at 1,500 – 2,500 rpm. MSIL says that the engine comes with a high efficiency turbo charger which generates higher low-end torque, making city driving effortless. The use of Dual Mass Flywheel along with optimized compression ratio reduces engine fluctuations and contributes to superior NVH performance.
The light-weight cast aluminium cylinder head and block along with optimized engine calibration contributes to improved fuel efficiency, the company added. Fuel efficiency is claimed to be 26.82 km/l. Unlike the aforementioned 1.3L engine, the new 1.5L variants doesn’t feature a mild-hybrid system.
Transferring the power to the front wheels is a 6-speed manual transmission. The position of reverse gear is relocated next to the 1st gear to reduce hand motion during tight parking conditions.
