Just when all the attention is drawn towards that upper window line, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake’s introduction begins with an assurance of practicality and space. “The new CLA Shooting Brake offers more space than its predecessor,” says Mercedes-Benz. There are some numbers too to go with that claim.
As with its sedan sibling, the new CLA Shooting Brake has grown in length, width and wheelbase as well, resulting in more cabin space.
Compared to its predecessor, there’s an additional 8 mm headroom, 22 mm shoulder room and 44 mm elbow room for the rear passengers. While there’s a 30 mm increase in wheelbase, the legroom increase is an insignificant 1 mm. Front passengers will appreciate 9 mm more headroom and shoulder room.
The tech inside the new CLA Shooting Brake will probably make the front occupants forget about all those aforementioned numbers. As with all the latest Mercs, there is the Mercedes-Benz User Experience or MBUX for short. The ambient lighting offers a selection of 64 colours and various effects in three brightness zones.
At 871 mm, the boot opening is significantly wider than in the previous model (635 mm). In addition, the tailgate can also be opened contactlessly with Easy-Pack and Hands-Free Access.
Last but not the least, the Cd value of 0.26 is naturally above that of the sedan’s 0.23. The tapering rear inherently creates somewhat less flow. Besides aerodynamics, the development work also focused on reducing wind noise.
