Unlike the JDM Suzuki Wagon R that we saw almost two years ago, the designers of the India-spec Wagon R have referenced the previous Wagon R models to come up with an updated design. The lineage is clearly visible, which is a good thing. While the front reminds us of the older Wagon R models, something from 2005, especially when you look at the split headlamps and that single chrome bar on the grille, the rear-end with its tall tail lamps looks rather different and fresh. Also notice the black plastic insert on the C-pillar for a floating roof effect.
Exterior equipment includes front fog lamps, roof antenna, electrically foldable ORVMs with integrated turn signals, and full wheel covers. None of the variants get alloy wheels.
The interior layout looks smart as well, especially when you look at that H-shaped design on the dashboard. Features include remote keyless entry, dual-tone scheme (standard), tilt adjustable steering, 7-inch Smartplay Studio touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay & Android Auto, two speakers, steering mounted audio & voice controls, Day/Night IRVM, and rear defogger. However, the new Wagon R misses out on auto AC and rear AC vents.
As for the safety kit, the new Wagon R gets driver airbag, ABS with EBD, driver & passenger seat belt reminder, speed alert system, rear parking sensors and central locking as standard across all variants. Front passenger airbag and seat belt pretensioners & force limiters are standard on ZXi variants, while offered as options on the rest of the trims.
As we saw in the list above, there are two engines on offer. The 998 cc K10B 3-cylinder unit produces 50 kW (67 bhp) at 5,500 rpm and 90 Nm of torque at 3,500 rpm. There’s also 1.2-litre (1,197 cc) K12M 4-cylinder engine on offer, developing 61 kW (82 bhp) at 6,000 rpm and 113 Nm of torque at 4,200 rpm.
Transmission is a 5-speed manual, while the AGS (AMT) is offered in VXi and ZXi models.
Last but not the least, the new Wagon R measures 3,655 mm in length, 1,620 mm in width and 1675 mm in height. Wheelbase measures 2,435 mm.
