Opel has revealed the GT X Experimental – a compact Coupe-SUV all-electric concept which previews the future Opel models. The concept also showcases the brand’s new design language.

Speaking of which, the design elements such as the logo-inspired wing-shaped daytime running light signature, the centre-crease line on the bonnet which sort of extends to the bumper, rear-end echoing the front fascia including the vertical line from the roof fin antenna to the crease in the bumper, will feature on future Opel vehicles.

The front and rear fascia has been designed around the logo, where the aforementioned creases and wing-shaped DRLs intersect the Blitz (logo).

The LED Blitz emblem shows the car’s operation state by lighting up in different colours. The concept also features LED matrix headlights and dark tinted Plexiglass.

The GT X measures 4,063 mm in length, 1,830 mm in width and 1,528 mm in height (including antenna). Wheelbase measures 2,625 mm. It rides on 17-inch wheels that visually look much larger due to the compact size of the SUV.

The minimalistic interiors has a wide, single screen in front of the driver. Two screens on the far left and right of the main panel, display the side views captured by the small pop-out cameras. Apparently, the air vents have been hidden behind the screens for a cleaner, “pure” look.

The clean, “high-tech” design approach also includes four seats that look like they are floating while the removable speakers are nestled under the headrests. The cropped triangle theme is repeated on the seat backs, accelerator and brake pedals.

As for the other details, the GT X will have Level 3 autonomous capability – meaning it can handle all aspects of driving but the driver must be able to respond to a request to intervene.

Cropped triangles are also engraved along the sill under the driver-side rear door: one of them has a small, hexagonal LED screen that shows the charge level of the battery. Speaking of the battery, its a 50 kWh lithium-ion pack, with inductive charging capability. Opel hasn’t shared the motor or power details yet.

The name
The name GT X Experimental is derived from the 1965 Experimental GT – a coupé that is claimed to be the first concept car ever produced by a car manufacturer in Europe. The additional X underlines Opel’s plan to further develop its footprint in the SUV market: 40 per cent of all Opel cars sold in 2021 are to be SUVs.

“Our Brand Concept shows how these values will come to life in our products in the future. Our engineering and design teams have put this into effect brilliantly in the Opel GT X Experimental. It gives a clear idea of how we at Opel see the mobility of the future,” said CEO Michael Lohscheller. Opel plans to electrify all models by 2024.
