Toyota has updated the 86 sports car for 2019 Model Year. Along with the two existing grades – 86 and 86 GT, there’ll be a TRD Special Edition limited production model.
Speaking of which, the Special Edition is limited to 1,418 units. It gets 12.8-/12.4-inch front/rear Brembo Brakes, SACHS dampers, TRD body kit, exclusive 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4 Tires, TRD exhaust with brushed stainless steel tips, and an exclusive Raven paint finish with TRD tricolor graphics.
Other exterior equipment includes LED projector-beam headlights, LED fog lamps and heated mirrors.
The TRD Special Edition interiors feature generous red accents and red contrast stitching, sport bucket seats with side bolsters, Granlux suede-like covering atop instrument cluster, and TRD logo embroidered on the passenger side.
Rest of the stuff inside includes 4.2-inch TFT Multi-Information Display (MID) with vehicle data screens, 7-inch touchscreen display, dual-zone AC, 8-speaker Pioneer audio system with Bluetooth connectivity, and an optional Navigation system with push-to-talk voice navigation.
Safety kit includes front, side and curtain airbags; ABS, EBD, Traction Control, Brake Assist (BA), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), and Smart Stop Technology (SST).
Powertrain
The 2019 Toyota 86 is powered by a 2.0-litre boxer (flat-four) engine, delivering 205 hp at 7,000 rpm and 156 lb.-ft. (212 Nm) of torque at 6,400 rpm. Transmission is a 6-speed short-throw manual sending power to the rear wheels.
There is also an option of 6-speed automatic transmission with steering-mounted paddle shifters. The Dynamic Rev Management technology “blips” the throttle on downshifts. A standard Torsen limited-slip differential helps maximize traction between the rear wheels while cornering.
However, with the automatic transmission, the engine’s output is slightly less – 200 hp and 151 lb.-ft. (205 Nm).
At 2,800 lbs (1,270 kg), the 86 (manual) is claimed to be among the lightest sports cars on the market. The car has a drag coefficient of 0.29 Cd (0.27 Cd on 86 GT).
Goes on sale in August 2018. The TRD Special Edition will carry a price tag of $32,420.
