Daimler and China’s BYD Automotive have launched a new electric vehicle called Denza 500 for the Chinese market. The EV combines Daimler’s vehicle architecture expertise and safety engineering with BYD’s battery technology.
The Denza 500 adopts a refreshed exterior design, featuring “tiger eye” LED headlights and rippling LED taillights. The company said that the EV has been tested in a wide range of harsh conditions, including severe winter testing at temperatures as low as –40 degrees Celsius.
The car is offered in two trims – Fashion Edition and Glory Edition. Features include a 12.3-inch LCD instrument cluster, electric front seats (driver 8-way, passenger 6-way), 9-inch touchscreen with connectivity services including a Denza smartphone application. Owners can use Denza application, WeChat account, or car navigation system to locate over 112,000 charging points across the country.
There is also single-zone climate control, Android support, bluetooth connectivity and 6-speaker Harman sound system.
The top-spec Glory Edition comes with features including 18-inch alloy wheels in 5-spoke design, panoramic sliding sunroof, Intelligent voice assistant, Apple CarPlay, Baidu smart navigation, cruise control, dual-zone climate control and 12-speaker Harman sound system.
Maximum power output of the Glory Edition is 135 kW (181 hp) and 300 Nm of torque (Rated – 68 kW and 177 Nm). The 70 kWh battery has a range of around 451 km (NEDC).
The Denza 500 Glory Edition can sprint from 0-100 km/h in 10.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 150 km/h.
Safety kit includes 8 airbags, Bosch ESP, Slow speed pedestrian warning system, Tire pressure monitoring system and Brake priority system.
Shenzhen Denza New Energy Automotive Co., Ltd. (Denza Auto) is a 50:50 joint venture of Daimler Greater China Ltd. and BYD Automotive Industry Co., Ltd. Established in 2011, Denza Auto is claimed to be the first Sino-German joint venture dedicated to battery electric vehicles and the first electric vehicle manufacturer in China to conduct crash tests according to the C-NCAP standard, receiving a 5-star rating.
The company said that in 2017, Denza achieved its best sales performance to date, with retail sales volume increasing by 85% year-on-year, outpacing the industry average, thanks to the strong customer reception of the Denza 400 model. The brand also expanded its reach through selected Mercedes-Benz dealer partners, which now offer sales and after-sales service for Denza vehicles. The brand has also partnered with Chinese ride hailing platforms.
