Toyota has revealed the 12th generation Corolla, in its hatchback form, ahead of the 2018 New York International Auto Show. The Corolla hatchback is the North American version of the new Auris that was unveiled in Geneva recently.
Similar to the Auris, the new Corolla hatchback is built on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, and the styling is based on the Under Priority Catamaran and Keen Look design philosophies.
Compared to MY2018 car, the new model is 1.5-inch longer and 1.2-inch wider. Height has been cut by 1-inch and wheelbase is up by 1.5-inch.
Exterior equipment includes J-shaped Bi-Beam LED headlamps, optional Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS), LED fog lamps and all-LED tail lamps. Wheel sizes range from 16-inches to 18-inches in diameter. The hatch door is made from lightweight materials called TSOP (Toyota Super Olefin Polymer) and ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene).
Interior equipment includes a high resolution 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa connectivity, Qi wireless charging, 7-inch TFT Multi-Information Display (MID), dual-zone climate control, 8-way power driver’s seat, and JBL 8-speaker 800-watt sound system.
As for the safety, the new Corolla gets the second generation of Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) which includes Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (adaptive cruise control), Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Automatic High Beam (AHB), Lane Tracing Assist (LTA), standard 7 airbags, Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, EBD, Brake Assist, ABS, Smart Stop Technology and Blind Spot Monitor (BSM).
Powertrain
Powering the new Corolla hatchback is a M20A-FKS 2.0-litre (1,987 cc) 4-cylinder engine, developing 168 hp at 6600 rpm and 205 Nm (151 lb-ft) of torque at 4800 rpm.
Transmission is a 6-speed iMT (Intelligent Manual Transmission) or a Dynamic-Shift CVT that has simulated 10-speed Sequential Shiftmatic steps, Sport Mode, and paddle shifters. It is claimed to feature a number of innovative elements, including the world’s first launch gear in a passenger vehicle CVT.
On-road feel and fuel efficiency have been further refined through extensive use of aluminium and ultra-high tensile steel in a light-weight chassis and body. Torsional rigidity is improved by a massive 60% compared to its predecessor, Toyota said.
