Lamborghini Urus gets 4.0 biturbo V8, 650 hp

While the big unveil is on December 4th, Lamborghini has let few journalists taste their “Super Sports Utility Vehicle” – the Urus.

The things that we already know are that the Urus is built on Volkswagen Group’s MLB-evo architecture, which underpins the Audi Q7, Bentley Bentayga, Porsche Cayenne and even the new Audi A4. Although they vary in size, it’s possible to share the platform because as the name suggests, it’s a modular architecture.

Jumping straight to the business end, the Urus will get Audi’s 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 which has been tuned to deliver 650 hp and 627 lb-ft (850 Nm) of torque, paired with an 8-speed ZF. Why no 6.0L V12? Well, apparently, China is one of the most important markets for Lamborghini, and over there the taxation is based on the displacement, and anything above 4.0L will cost more.

In the review for MotorTrend, Jonny mentions a Lamborghini-claimed 0-62 mph time of 3.7 seconds, while another journalist managed to clock in at 3.34 seconds in a prototype equipped with a Vbox data logger. As for the top speed, Lamborghini claims something greater than 186 mph (300 km/h).

The Urus’ brakes are apparently the largest brakes in the world. They measure 17.3-inch (carbon-ceramic) up front with 10-piston calipers, and 14.6-inch discs at the rear with 4-piston calipers. The prototype had 21-inch wheels, while the production version is expected to have 22- and 23-inch ones as options.

Jonny adds that there are a few more things that Lamborghini is yet to finalize, which might take a few more months. Apparently, the SUV will be offered in two body styles: the regular and the Dune version. The latter will have increased approach and departure angles. Two versions because not many are going to take an expensive “SSUV” for rough use, but some will. This could also mean that the 6 driving modes we saw in the teasers might be split across the two models. The regular variant might not get all the 6 modes.
