Mercedes-Benz has unwrapped the third-generation CLS at the 2017 LA Auto Show. The new CLS-Class adopts the ‘Sensual Purity’ design language that we first saw in the Concept A sedan and later in the EQA Concept.

With the new design language, the sharp edges and lines have been significantly reduced, yet the car retains the low-slung fastback silhouette of the original CLS. According to Mercedes, the front end is reminiscent of a shark’s nose, and appears longer thanks to the fully inset bonnet. The radiator grille widens towards the base, resembling the contours of the grille on the AMG GT. Furthermore, the new car has a drag coefficient of 0.26 Cd.

The interior follows the design language we’ve seen in the latest Mercs. The large 12.3‑inch displays and turbine-style air vents, to name a few. There are 64 colors for ambient lighting. Options include Energizing comfort control, Driving Assistance Package, Dynamic Body Control and Air Body Control air suspension.

For the first time, the new CLS Coupe is a 5 seater. The backrests can be folded down in a 40/20/40 ratio, expanding the generous 520‑litre luggage compartment.

Powertrains
The new CLS is available in 350d 4Matic, 400d 4Matic, and 450 4Matic variants. The first two are powered by a 2,925 cc in-line 6-cylinder diesel, with an output of 286 hp and 600 Nm of torque in the 350d, and 340 hp and 700 Nm of torque in the 400d.

The 450 is powered by a 3.0L in-line 6-cylinder petrol, with an output of 367 hp and 500 Nm of torque. This variant comes with a 48-volt EQ Boost (integrated starter/generator) (mild-hybrid system) that gets an additional 22 hp and 250 Nm of torque. The 450 accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 4.8 seconds.

Transmission is a 9G-Tronic automatic. At a later date, there’ll be AMG derivatives too.

Edition 1
The Edition 1 will be available around one year after the market launch.  The special edition includes COPPER ART interior concept with seats in black pearl Nappa leather with centre sections in a diamond design and copper-coloured accents, copper-coloured contrasting topstitching on the centre console, seats, armrests, dashboard and door linings, and a unique diamond grille with matt chrome pins and louvre with a copper-coloured shimmer.
