Maruti Suzuki is working on a next generation Alto, internally codenamed Y1K, is expected to come with a smaller yet highly refined 660cc engine, reports Business World.
The engine we speak of here, already powers the Japan-spec Alto, the new Wagon R, and few more small cars in Suzuki’s JDM lineup. The small 3-cylinder motor makes 52 PS (51 hp) of power and 63 Nm of torque. Claimed fuel efficiency as per JC08 standards is 37 km/l for the 2WD and 33.2 km/l for the AWD variant.
India’s largest carmaker has been facing some tough competition from Renault and Datsun lately, taking away the sales of the company’s A-Segment cars. Which is why Maruti is said to be working hard at its R&D centre at Rohtak, Haryana, developing the Alto’s successor, expected to debut in 2019. Once launched in India, the engine will be complaint to BS-VI emission norms and due to its high-end technology, the price tag is expected to be equivalent to or slightly higher than the current 800cc (BS-IV) variant.
The rumors might be true, as MSIL had imported few JDM-spec Altos equipped with 660cc engine, for testing purposes back in 2015.
