After getting a clarification regarding local sourcing of materials for manufacturing in India, Elon Musk now appears to be in discussion with the Govt. of India for a ‘temporary relief’ on import duties until a manufacturing facility is set up in the country.

As always, replying to a Twitter user’s question, Elon said that he’s requesting the government for some temporary solution until he gets some things sorted out, as setting up a plant will usually take a lot of time.
India has one of the highest import duties for cars in the world, close to 160% when all the charges are added.
Once Tesla officially enters the Indian market, the first car to on sale will be the Model 3.
