The International Police Organization or Interpol is on a hunt for five ex-VW managers accused of wrongdoing in connection with the infamous emissions scandal, reports Germany’s Sueddeutsche Zeitung.
The United States has issued international arrest warrants, which reportedly includes former Chairman Martin Winterkorn. Earlier this year, Oliver Schmidt, a former Volkswagen executive was arrested by FBI at Miami airport, as he was about to fly back to Germany. Now the hunt is on for the five more.
The report further adds that the German authorities are unlikely to extradite the five accused to the United States. According to the constitution, German citizens can be extradited only to another EU nation or to an international court. But leaving Germany, they’ll be at a risk of being extradited to US from a third country.
On top of that, VW’s legal adviser has advised several senior managers not to travel to the United States.
VW admitted deception and issued a public apology, soon after the scandal broke out in September 2015.
