Volkswagen has delivered a complete package with the sixth generation Polo by not only revealing the standard version, but also the 200 PS Polo GTI and the Polo Beats – a collaboration with Beats Audio.
I’ll let the pictures talk about the design, however, I do have to say that the VW designers have taken the new Polo to a whole new level. It looks a lot more premium and classier than before.
The Polo is a young, fresh car. It combines charisma with strong technology. No other car offers so much space for its size. This makes our Polo the number one compact car, and it will remain number one. – Dr. Herbert Diess, Chairman of the Volkswagen Brand Board of Management
Dimensions | Mk.6 | Mk.5 |
Length | 4,053 mm | 3,972 mm |
Width (w/o mirrors) | 1,751 mm | 1,682 mm |
Height | 1,446 mm | 1,453 mm |
Wheelbase | 2,564 mm | 2,470 mm |
The new Polo is not only longer and wider but has also got more wheelbase than before, which should translate into a better rear-seat comfort, all thanks to the MQB platform. The boot space too has gone up from 280 to 351 litres.
Powertrains
While this is completely a market-dependent topic, VW says that a number of Euro 6 engines will be available with power outputs ranging from 48 kW/65 PS to 110 kW/150 PS. As expected, there’ll be a new 1.0L 3-cylinder TGI with an output of 66 kW/90 PS. This engine can run on compressed natural gas, first time in a Polo. In addition, there will be a choice of four petrol and two diesel engines, all equipped as standard with start/stop system and regenerative braking. Every engine with a power output of 70 kW/95 PS or above can be combined with a dual clutch gearbox (DSG), added the company in an official statement.
Features
As for the interiors, VW designers seem to have drawn the inspiration from other premium brands within the Group. There are a lot of body-colored contrasting accents on the dashboard, centre console and on the seats. There is Audi Virtual Cockpit-like digital instrument cluster, which is probably an optional extra. The glossy touchscreen infotainment size ranges from 6.5- to 8.0-inches.
Options include full LED headlights, LED taillights, an Air Care Climatronic system with humidity and sun sensor plus allergen filter, wireless charging for smartphones, Sport Select running gear with adjustable shock absorbers and one of the biggest panoramic sunroofs in this class.
Optional driver assistance and safety kit on offer include adaptive cruise control ACC (can now be activated up to a speed of 210 km/h), Blind Spot Detection, Rear Traffic Alert, semi-automated Park Assist system, and a ‘maneuvering function’. The optional Keyless Access locking and engine starting system, which is also new, can be used to unlock and start up the Polo.
Standard features include LED daytime running lights with coming-home and leaving-home functions, a speed limiter and the Front Assist area monitoring system with City Emergency Braking and Pedestrian Monitoring.
In addition to the three Trendline, Comfortline and Highline trims, there’s a special edition ‘Polo Beats’ featuring a 300-watt sound system.
A range of fresh new colours (a total of 14 exterior colours are available) and twelve wheels (14- to 18-inch, some painted in contrasting colour), dashpads in a multitude of décors and 11 different seat covers for those who want to personalize.
Prices for the Polo Trendline in Germany start from €12,975.
