Responding to the media reports on a possible delay of Tesla’s India debut, the Govt. of India through its ‘Make in India’ Twitter handle has clarified Elon Musk that there is no mandate to locally source components for manufacturing in India.

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry’s Make in India Twitter handle tweeted “FDI policy of India does not mandate any such minimum sourcing of components by manufacturers”, responding to Musk’s doubt that 30% of parts must be locally sourced.
@TheAvinashSingh Maybe I'm misinformed, but I was told that 30% of parts must be locally sourced and the supply doesn't yet exist in India to support that.

The 30% local sourcing is only for a foreign company’s wholly-owned retail outlets.
Tesla had plans to enter the Indian market by summer this year, and has been accepting orders for the Model 3 from India too.
