Dodge has unveiled the Challenger SRT Demon, specially designed for drag lovers. The “street-legal drag car” is claimed to be the fastest ¼-mile car in the world, and also holds a Guinness World Record for longest wheelie from a standing start by a production car at 2.92 feet.
Not just that, the Demon also registers the highest g-force (1.8 g) ever recorded at launch in a production car.
Tim Kuniskis, Head of Passenger Cars, says that the Demon engine is all-new, and is not just a tuned-up version of Hellcat’s engine. The only part that carries over is the cylinder head. The 6.2-litre V8 produces 840 hp and 770 ft-lbs (1,044 Nm) of torque. Compared to Hellcat, the Demon features a larger Supercharger – 2.7-liters versus 2.4-liters, increased boost pressure – 14.5 psi versus 11.6 psi, and higher rpm limit – 6,500 rpm versus 6,200 rpm. When in drag mode, the air conditioner is redirected to cool the intercoolers.
Since the Demon is a drag focused car, there’s a TransBrake paired to the 8-speed automatic transmission, first for a production car. The TransBrake locks the output shaft of the transmission to hold the car before launch, allowing the driver to increase engine rpm for higher torque and quicker response, the company said.
Kuniskis further adds that the Demon’s 9.65 sec quarter-mile performance has been verified by the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA), and they have “banned” it. The Demon comes with factory-installed wider, Nitto street-legal drag radials, which have 40% more launch force compared with SRT Hellcat tires. To be sold in limited numbers, the Demon Crate is further customized with the buyer’s name, VIN and serial number.
