Volkswagen has unveiled the new fastback sedan ‘Arteon’ at the 2017 Geneva International Motor Show. The avant-garde gran turismo as VW calls it, will succeed the Volkswagen CC and will be positioned above the Passat.
Based on the Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) platform, the Arteon features full-LED headlamps with integrated DRLs as standard. Stand-out features include wrap-around bonnet, and a radiator grille that encompasses the vehicle’s full width. Windows are frameless. The top-hinged rear hatch gives access to the 563 litre luggage compartment, which can be expanded to 1,557 litres.
Equipment
Standard equipment includes driver assistance systems such as Emergency Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and navigation system. Predictive cornering lights which use camera-based information and navigation data are available as an option.
Along with the base model, Arteon will be available in ‘Elegance’ and ‘R-Line’ trims. The standard configuration of the Arteon Elegance is focused primarily on premium class equipment and style. The Arteon R-Line puts sportiness even more at the heart of the vehicle’s configuration, typical of VW R-Line models. Based on the different orientations of these three equipment lines, the fastback model can be personalized extensively. The range of optional equipment includes features such as a panoramic tilt/slide sunroof, three-zone automatic air conditioning (Air Care Climatronic including air quality sensor and allergen filter), massage seats in front, heated steering wheel and two-tone nappa leather interior. Other options include an all-digital instrument cluster, a head-up display, and the 9.2-inch infotainment system with glass design and support for gesture controls.
Powertrains
The Arteon is launching with a range of six turbocharged 4-cylinder direct fuel injection engines, with power output ranging from 150 and 280 PS. The first two power levels of the petrol (TSI) and diesel (TDI) engines are identical at 110 kW/150 PS and 140 kW/190 PS. The most powerful TSI delivers 206 kW/280 PS, while the most powerful TDI produces 176 kW/240 PS. The base petrol engine, the 1.5 TSI Evo, is a new design and features Active Cylinder Management (ACT).
The most powerful TSI and TDI engines are coupled to a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DSG), and will also have 4Motion all-wheel drive as standard.
The fastback measures 4,862 mm long, 1,871 mm wide, and 1,427 mm tall. Wheelbase is measured at 2,841 mm. It rides on 20-inch alloy wheels.
