Renault owned marque Alpine has unveiled its Cayman and Alfa Romeo 4C rival – Alpine A110 at the 87th Geneva International Motor Show. If you didn’t know yet, the new A110 is an evolution of the original A110 Berlinette (Coupé) of the ’60s (sold between 1961 – 1977).
Including the shapes and silhouette, the new A110 carries over the bonnet’s central ‘spine’ of the original berlinette. Aluminum has been used for the platform and body, as much as 96%, and carbon bits for the interiors, resulting in a kerb weight of only 1,080 kg. The mass is concentrated around the centre of the car, with the fuel tank behind the front axle and the engine in front of the rear axle. Alpine promises agility with a weight distribution of 44/56 percent front/rear.
As for the business end, there is 1.8-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine developed by the Renault-Nissan Alliance, with an output of 252 hp and 320 Nm of torque, paired to a Getrag developed 7-speed wet clutch DCT that sends power to the rear wheels. Power-to-weight ratio is at 233 hp/tonne, resulting in a 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) acceleration in 4.5 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph (250 km/h).
There are 3 driving modes – Normal, Sport, and Track, in which the engine and gearbox settings, steering, ESC, exhaust note and driver display are adapted to suit the driving conditions, and also “the driver’s mood,” says Alpine. Also, Alpine claims the A110’s 0.32 Cd (drag coefficient) is the lowest in the sports car segment.
The A110’s aluminum brake calipers have been developed by Brembo. The rear brake system is specific to Alpine and features an integrated parking brake actuator, claimed to be a world first, saving 2.5 kg. The car rides on Otto Fuchs 18-inch lightweight forged aluminum wheels, wearing 205/40 (front) and 235/40 (rear) Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres.
The A110 will be manufactured in the Alpine factory in Dieppe, France, and the Première Edition (pictured above) will be limited to 1,995 units. Reportedly, all of them have been sold out. Deliveries will commence late 2017 in Europe, and in 2018 for the UK and Japan. Retails at €58,500 in France (inclusive of taxes).
