Elon Musk drops ‘Motors’ from Tesla, as the company now looks beyond electric cars. The new name Tesla Inc. is effective from February 1, 2017, the company said in an SEC filing on Wednesday.
Tesla now owns solar energy services provider SolarCity, which has come up with Solar Roof, eliminating the traditional solar panels. Instead, the photovoltaic cells are integrated into a textured-glass layered solar roof tiles, where the customer can choose the design/texture he wants. The solar roof tile has color louver film, which allows the cells to blend into the roof.
Few reports suggest that the SolarCity brand will disappear. In other words, Solar Roof will be marketed under Tesla brand. The $2.6 billion acquisition of SolarCity was closed in November last year.
Tesla also makes Powerwall, a rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack for home use. The Powerwall is being produced at the under-construction Gigafactory 1 in Nevada.
