The fourth member of the Land Rover Range Rover family is called the ‘Velar’, to be unveiled on 1 March 2017, and can be seen in-person at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. Land Rover says the origin of the name Velar (pronounced vel-ar) dates back to the first Range Rover prototypes of the sixties.
The Velar is expected to have a coupe-SUV body style, and as depicted in the sketch above, it’ll be positioned between, or as Land Rover likes to call it filling the white space between the Evoque and the Sport. Looking at the teaser image, I guess it’s safe to assume that the Velar is something like a “larger version of the Evoque”.
Land Rover Chief Design Officer Gerry McGovern says, “We call the Velar the avant-garde Range Rover. It brings a new dimension of glamour, modernity and elegance to the brand. The Range Rover Velar changes everything”
When development engineers needed to hide the true identity of the 26 pre-production Range Rovers, they chose the name Velar, derived from the Latin velare meaning to veil or cover.
