Any modern car with retro touches always looks classy; more so, if it was inspired by an Aston Martin! One such is this David Brown Speedback GT. I’m sure most of you never heard of it because the company is fairly new. The Speedback GT made its public debut at the Top Marques Monaco in 2014. The 2017 model you’re seeing in these pictures will be displayed at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show in March.
The Speedback GT is sculpted on a Jaguar XK (X150) platform and apparently takes over 8,000 man hours to achieve a perfect finish. The bespoke interior involving natural grain leather and high-grade veneer takes endless man hours as well.
Thankfully, it’s just the design that is retro. The Speedback GT packs all the equipment of 2017, including LED headlamps, heated and cooled 16-way power adjustable seats with memory, rain sensing wipers, electric ORVMs, dual-zone climate control, 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system, electric parking brake and many more.
Safety is up to date too; besides the usual airbags and ABS, there is Dynamic Stability Control, Brake Assist, and Active Differential as well. Compared to the 2014 model, the 2017 car features 237 changes/improvements in total. Ex-Jaguar Land Rover designer Alan Mobberley is said to have designed the Speedback GT.
On the business end, there is XKR’s 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine, producing 375 kW (510 metric hp) between 6,000-6,500 rpm and 625 Nm (461 lb-ft) of torque between 2,500-5,000 rpm, paired with a 6-speed ZF automatic transmission that drives the rear wheels. The boot space when you fold down the rear seats measures 502 litres. At 4.77 m long and 2.09 m wide, it’s a pretty big car too.
Despite the founder’s similar name as the previous owner of Aston Martin, there is no actual connection. I mentioned “actual” because this thing so reminds me of my all-time favorite DB5.
The only problem is, the Speedback GT will cost you an eye-watering £495,000.
