Volvo has launched its flagship S90 sedan in India at Rs 53.5 lakh, ex-showroom, Mumbai. The S90 is based on Volvo’s SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) platform, which also underpins the XC90. At the moment, the car is available only in D4 Inscription trim in India, and a plug-in hybrid variant could follow at a later point of time. Although there’s no confirmation yet.
Volvo S90 replaces the S80 globally, and the design is very similar to what we have seen in the XC90 with Volvo’s new signature – Thor’s Hammer LED lights. The grille and the bumper design too is pretty much the same as XC90.
The S90 is powered by a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine, producing 190 hp and 400 Nm of torque. Transmission is taken care by Aisin-sourced 8-speed automatic, which transfers power to the front wheels. There are 3 driving modes on offer – Eco, Dynamic and Comfort.
The interior layout too is very similar to the XC90, sporting a Nappa leather upholstery with large walnut wood and aluminium accents on the dash, door pads and center console. The twist start/stop knob and swivel wheel style drive mode selector we saw in the XC90, makes it to the S90 as well. Feature list includes portrait style 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation and Apple CarPlay, 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system, multi-zone climate control, cruise control and some more.
Being a Volvo, one can expect a great amount of safety in the S90 as well. Safety kit includes park assist, city safety (autonomous emergency braking system), lane keeping assist, 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, ESP, hill assist and all the usual stuff. The car will be brought to India via CBU route, and will take on the Mercedes E-Class, BMW 5 Series, Audi A6 and Jag XF.
