Mazda board members have reportedly agreed for a rotary engined (Wankel engine) next-generation RX, likely to be named as RX-9, due in 2019 or 2020 according to a Japanese auto magazine. The said car will take design cues from Mazda RX-Vision concept, and will be a rear-wheel drive coupe.
The now-dead rotary engines can produce a lot of power in a small capacity and will have a far higher power-to-weight ratio than a piston engine. However, they were always criticized for their oil consumption and mediocre fuel economy, bad emissions and some other issues that Mazda simply couldn’t fix because of the design’s inherent weaknesses.
Mazda was the only carmaker to produce Wankel engines till 2012 and the company hopes to bring it back with this new coupe.
