Looking at the June sales figures, Maruti-Suzuki, which had 7 models among the top 10 PVs in May, saw its domestic sales drop by over 10% in June. The company says the fall was due to the fire at Subros plant, largest supplier of air-con systems to Maruti Suzuki.
The company sold a total of 92,133 units in June 2016. The sales fell despite an impressive performance in the utility vehicle segment, especially its compact SUV Vitara Brezza. Sales in the UV category (Gypsy, Ertiga, Vitara Brezza, S-Cross) went up by 75.5% to 9,708 units, but the volumes in the passenger car space fell by 16.3% to 72,551 units. Sales of small cars, which includes Alto and WagonR, too saw a sharp decline of 19.3% to 27,712 units. Volumes in the compact car segment (Swift, Ritz, Celerio, DZire, Baleno) and mid size sedan segment (Ciaz) slid by 12.5% to 39,971 units and by 24.3% to 2,800 units respectively.
Hyundai continued to grow in sales on the back of its two hatchbacks, Grand i10 and Elite i20 and also the compact SUV Creta which is a runaway hit. Hyundai registered domestic sales of 39,806 units which is 9.7% higher than 36,300 units sold in the same month last year. Exports grew marginally by 0.9% to touch 15,907 with cumulative sales of 55,713 units for the month of June 2016.
Rakesh Srivastava, SVP, Sales and Marketing, Hyundai Motor India said, “Hyundai volumes grew by 9.7 percent with sales of 39,806 units with strong pull performance of volume models the Grand i10, Elite i20 & Creta and on the buildup of positive environment with good beginning of monsoons, the announcement of 7th Pay commission for Central Government Employees”
Mahindra & Mahindra remained the third largest PV maker in June with sales of 34,991 units in the domestic market. This is a 5% jump over 33,282 units sold in June 2015. The company’s cumulative sales, including exports, grew 8% and stood at 39,011 units in June.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor is tasting success again with the new Innova Crsyta. The company became the fourth largest PV maker in India in May, overtaking both Tata Motors and Honda, managed to hold on to the spot in June as well. Owing to good sales of newly launched Innova Crysta, Toyota sold 13,502 units in domestic market, which is a spike of 29%. For the month of June though, it has sold 7,500 units of Crysta, and now has a waiting period of around three months. It’s mid-size sedan Etios and premium sedan Camry too saw their sales growing.
Honda Cars on the other hand, which is now the fifth largest PV manufacturer in India, registered the sharpest fall in sales among the top players. The Japanese automaker’s domestic sales fell 38% to settle at 11,407 units.
Yoichiro Ueno, President & CEO, Honda Cars India, said, “The shift in consumer preferences led to high stock of diesel vehicles at our dealerships. As a deliberate measure, we have been rationalising wholesale dispatches to correct the stock situation at our dealerships. The market is good and our retail sales were much higher than wholesales. The stock levels at our dealerships have been almost normalised and we expect that our wholesales would match the retail sales level in July”
Tata Motors saw 22% growth in June 2016. Sales of passenger vehicles in the domestic market stood at 12,509 units last month against 10,281 units last year, Tata Motors said in a statement. As for passenger cars, the sales rose 37% to 11,705 units for the month of June compared with 8,516 units same period last year.
The French carmaker, Renault, too had a successful month as its climbed up a whopping 173% year-on-year. The domestic sales for Renault stood at 11,837 units in June 2016 as against 4,340 units in the corresponding month last year.
The cumulative sales for the period of January-June stands at 61,895 as against 23,346 in the corresponding period last year, thereby registering a growth of 165 percent.
Volkswagen, Europe’s leading carmaker, on Friday reported a marginal year-on-year fall of 0.4% in sales in June. Volkswagen sold 4022 units in June 2016 as compared to 4039 units sold in the corresponding month of the previous year.
Ford India’s domestic sales in June jumped up a massive 109% to 9,469 vehicles as against 4,527 units, while exports nearly tripling to 10,285 vehicles compared to 3,452 units last year. Its combined domestic wholesales and exports in June grew to 19,754 vehicles from 7,979 vehicles last year.
