Video: 2017 Audi A5 Coupé and S5 Coupé Unveiled

Audi unveiled the second generation A5 and S5 Coupé against a backdrop of a breathtaking 3D light show at its headquarters in Germany. This time there are less curves, more sharpness and a longer hood. It gets a new set of Matrix LED headlamps, which looks simple and less complex than that of the new A4. It’s a same story on the back as well. Everything has been sharpened up. What’s retained from its 9 year old predecessor is the beautiful wave shaped shoulder line. The idea was not to stray too far from the original formula but to make it look more sporty, elegant and sharp.

The interiors are similar to the latest Audis featuring a continuous air vent strip, 12.3 inch virtual cockpit, latest version of 8.3 inch MMI infotainment system with touch sensitive rotary controller. There’s an option of ambient lighting with a choice of 30 shades. The new thing is Audi connect SIM, a permanently installed sim card for LTE connectivity for up to three years free of charge, both in Germany and many European cities.

Based on the MLB Evo platform, which is also shared with the latest A4 and Q7, the new A5 Coupe measures more, and the wheelbase has been increased for more interior space. Audi says the new platform and the sophisticated aerodynamic design has helped the new A5 Coupe trim the curb weight by 60 kilograms, and has a drag co-efficient of 0.25.

Now coming to the engines, Germany will get a choice of two petrol and three diesel engines. Claimed to be 17% more performance and 22% less fuel consumption. The range topping S5 gets a newly developed 3.0 litre (2,995 CC) TFSI V6 engine producing 354 hp, 21 more than the outing model. For starters, there’s a 6 speed manual or a 7 Speed S tronic with front- or all-wheel drive option. The range topping diesel model and the S5 gets an eight-speed tiptronic and the Quattro all wheel drive system as standard. Quattro with Ultra Technology also makes it to the new A5.

Optionals are Suspension with damper control and dynamic steering. Audi says most of the safety systems are either completely new or have been extensively updated. The S5 Coupe is claimed to do 0-100 in 4.7 seconds, and its newly developed 3.0 litre V6 engine is claimed to consume just 7.3 liters of fuel per 100 km. The car will go on sale in Germany and few European countries in fall 2016. Watch the video embedded above, and subscribe to our YouTube channel if you’re new.
