NGT likely to extend diesel ban to 11 more cities

NGT-Diesel-Ban

There are reports of National Green Tribunal considering to extend the ban of diesel engined vehicles with capacity of 2000 CC or more to 11 more cities including Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad.

However, the Central government has appealed to NGT to hold on to this. In a hearing today, the NGT has sought data from various states including Maharashtra, West Bengal, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar with details on the worst polluted city in the state and its population, number of vehicles in the city, and the split between petrol and diesel vehicles. Apparently, these State governments have been asked to submit the relevant information by May 31, 2016.

Companies like Toyota and Mercedes have already expressed strong displeasure regarding this ban, and have questioned the country’s credibility as an investment destination putting their investments in the country on hold. Read here.

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufactures (SIAM) have expressed their concerns saying the ban will discourage carmakers from investing in the country.

On a lighter note, the NGT’s understanding of diesel engines and emissions seems to be somewhat similar to that of Vishwa Bandhu Gupta’s understanding of cloud computing. Here’s a very sensible article from Team-BHP on why this 2.0 litre diesel ban doesn’t make any sense at all. > Worth reading
