The Chinese seems to like their cars a bit longer, which why there are some German models offering LWB variants exclusive to the market. The latest one to that list is the Audi Q5L, unveiled at Auto China 2018.
The Q5L is also the first long wheelbase SUV from Ingolstadt. Compared to the standard wheelbase Q5, the Q5L wheelbase is up by 88 mm. The rear passengers gain an additional 110 mm (4.3 in) of knee room. The luggage space however, remains unchanged at 550 to 1,550 liters.
Buyers of the Q5L can choose between the Vogue, Lifestyle, Design, Sport and Sport plus trims, depending on the engine. Even the Vogue (base model) comes with three-zone automatic air conditioning and the Audi smartphone interface on board. Starting with the Lifestyle trim, the high-end MMI navigation plus and the Audi virtual cockpit join the equipment list. The Design, Sport and Sport plus trims also include the Bang & Olufsen Sound System with 3D sound.
The Audi pre sense basic and Audi pre sense city safety systems come as standard in all trims; in addition, there are assistance packages for the city and for suburban streets. Starting with the Lifestyle trim, LED headlights are available as an option with Matrix LED technology. The panoramic glass roof is also standard.
Wheels range from 18 to 20 inches in diameter.
Powertrain
Powering the Q5L is a 2.0 4-cylinder TFSI with 140 kW (190 hp) or 185 kW (252 hp) tunes. The 0 to 100 km/h (0 – 62.1 mph) sprint happens in 8.6 or 6.7 seconds, respectively. A 7-speed S tronic transfers the power to the quattro AWD system.
Along with the standard wheelbase Q5, the Q5L too is produced (CKD) in FAW-VW joint venture plant in Changchun, northern China. A part of the prefabricated components come from Audi’s plant in San José Chiapa, Mexico. With the new Q5L, Audi is seeking to further expand its position in the Chinese SUV market. Sales launch in summer 2018.
