It was bound to happen, but it was just a matter of time. The Aventador S is finally here. On the outside, it gets a more aggressive bumper design with a longer front splitter, rear diffuser and a new set of wheels. Personally, I think the SV looks more aggressive. The design center (Centro Stile) says it has intelligently integrated certain elements of past icons, such as the lines of rear wheel arches reminiscent of the original Countach.
“This is the next generation Aventador as well as the expression of new technological and performance milestones in super sports car development,” says Automobili Lamborghini Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Stefano Domenicali. “The Aventador S is visionary design, cutting-edge technology and driving dynamics in pure harmony, and elevates the concept of super sports cars to a new level,” he added.
The new thing here is, of course, the rear-wheel steering, which works with the active front steering system (Lamborghini Dynamic Steering). At low speeds, the rear axle steers in the opposite direction with respect to the front axle virtually reducing the wheelbase, and at high speed, the two axles rotate in parallel generating a virtual increase of the wheelbase. The engineers had to fiddle with the pushrod and magneto-rheological suspension in order to make it adapt to the new four-wheel steering system.
EGO — It’s the 4th driving mode, where the traction, steering and suspension can be customized by the driver. Similar to the “Individual” mode we’ve seen in many other cars.
The Aventador’s naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12 outputs an additional 40 hp over its predecessor, to a maximum 740 hp, with a torque of 690 Nm at 5,500 rpm remaining the same. To achieve the power increase, Lamborghini says both VVT (Variable Valve Timing) and VIS (Variable Intake System) have been optimized in order to obtain an enriched torque curve.
Additionally, the maximum engine revs have been increased from 8,350 to 8,500 rpm. A dry weight of 1,575 kg provides a weight-to-power ratio of 2.13 kg/hp. Acceleration from 0-100 km/h is reached in 2.9 seconds, with a top speed of 350 km/h. Transmission is taken care of by Lamborghini’s 7-speed ISR system (AMT), which can shift gears in 50 milliseconds. The exhaust system is 20% lighter than its predecessor.
Deliveries have been planned for the next spring at the following prices: $421,350 in the United States, €281,555 in Europe, and £225,955 in the UK.
