Will go on sale in early 2025
Skoda has added one more subcompact crossover to its portfolio here in India, and it’s called the ‘Kylaq’. The name, derived from the Mount Kailash (Kailāsa for Indians), was chosen via online voting. The full list of prices is expected to be revealed in the coming days, but the base model with a manual transmission carries an ex-showroom price tag of INR 7.89 lakh (EUR 8,968 or USD 9,344).
The Kylaq is built on the Volkswagen Group MQB A0 IN platform, the same one that underpins models such as the Kushaq–Taigun duo and Slavia–Virtus duo. However, in terms of positioning, the Kylaq slots below the Kushaq. It is one of those sub-4 meter offerings, measuring 3,995 mm long, 1,783 mm wide and 1,619 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,566 mm. As for styling, there are no revolutionary or wow-inducing factors here; I guess the design team has chosen to be on the safer side. The rear fascia doesn’t even get the trendy lightbar, which, depending on your perspective, may or may not be a good thing.
Depending on the trim, key exterior features include LED projector headlights, a gloss black front grille, 17-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, LED taillight signatures, and an electric sunroof with anti-pinch safety feature. Buyers get to choose from 5 exterior colors: Olive Gold, Tornado Red, Carbon Steel, Brilliant Silver and Candy White.
Inside, the dashboard design is quite similar to recent Skoda products. Key highlights, depending on the trim, include a 10-inch central touchscreen, an 8-inch Virtual Cockpit, ambient lighting, 6-way electrically-adjustable and ventilated front seats, auto AC, rear AC vents, rear USB charging ports, a cooled glove box, wireless smartphone charging, and a boot space of 446 litres. Safety and assistance features include 6 airbags, Multi-Collision Brake, Roll Over Protection, Motor Slip Regulation, Electronic Differential Lock, XDS+, Anti-lock Brakes, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, Electronic Stability Control, Hill-Hold Control and TPMS.
Moving on to the juicy bits of the story, the Kylaq comes powered with a 1.0L 3-cylinder TSI (turbo petrol) engine, offering 85 kW (116 metric hp) and 178 Nm (131 lb-ft). Not bad figures for a small jacked-up city hatch, I guess. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic.
