LA-based EV startup Canoo and retail giant Walmart have released a joint statement that the latter is purchasing 4,500 all-electric delivery vehicles, with an option to purchase up to 10,000 units. Walmart associates are gonna use these vehicles to deliver online orders while contributing to the company’s goal to achieve zero emissions by 2040. These so-called Lifestyle Delivery Vehicles (LDV) are expected to hit the roads sometime next year.
The LDV is a cargo version of the ‘Lifestyle Vehicle’ minivan that Canoo has in its portfolio. However, Canoo is still collecting pre-orders, with plans to launch in late 2022. Base price starts at $34,750.
The Delivery version boasts a cargo volume of 3,398 litres (120 ft³) and a payload capacity of up to 664 kg (1,464 lbs). It probably can deliver a couple of fridges and TVs at once. An 80 kWh battery pack is claimed to offer a range of up to 402 km (250 mi). Horsepower and torque figures are not available yet, but the passenger version is claimed to offer up to 261 kW (350 bhp/355 metric hp) depending on the variant.
Canoo uses the same multi-purpose platform (MPP) to slap on various bodystyles including a pickup truck and an old-fashioned boxy delivery van.
Also, you probably have heard that NASA is going back to the Moon with the Artemis program; I mean, some of the astronauts are gonna land on the Moon again. The Artemis I is planned to launch on 29th August 2022, and it’s basically gonna be an uncrewed test flight. The Artemis II, planned for May 2024, will fly the astronauts, but it’s gonna be a crewed lunar flyby. The Artemis III, planned for 2025, is the mission that’ll actually land the astronauts on the Moon. And NASA has ordered a few Crew Transportation Vehicles (CTVs) based on the aforementioned Lifestyle Vehicle minivans, for crewed Artemis missions. Canoo expects to deliver them to NASA by June 2023.
