An all-electric Cayman GT4 road car in the works too?
Remember the Mission R concept Porsche showcased at the 2021 IAA Mobility in Munich? Well, the concept has been transformed into a 718 Cayman GT4 ePerformance. Porsche has built two examples in fact, and one of ’em will take part in the Goodwood Festival of Speed next month (from 23 to 26 June 2022). Post that, the two all-electric AWD racers will travel through various European countries before heading to North America (via ship) in early 2023 and finally concluding the world tour in the Asia-Pacific region in mid-2024.
The 718 Cayman GT4 ePerformance is based on the 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport model, but the electric powertrain and the related components have been borrowed as-is from the Mission R concept. There are two permanently excited synchronous motors, one at each axle, delivering a peak output of 800 kW (1088 metric hp). In qualification mode, the output is limited to 735.5 kW (1000 metric hp).
The electric motors and the battery pack are being cooled with oil directly. “The integration of oil cooling has significantly impacted the vehicle concept. With experts in the fields of aerodynamics and thermodynamics as well as high-voltage and bodywork specialists, the development team created an architecture to tap the full potential of the battery cells for the first time, since there is no thermal derating. In this way, the power output in racing mode remains constant for half an hour,” says Björn Förster, GT4 ePerformance project manager.
And thanks to 900-volt architecture, the battery pack apparently takes only 15 minutes to get juiced up from 5% to 80% SoC.
The race car is 14 cm wider than the 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport, and according to Porsche, ~6,000 parts were designed from scratch. The bodywork is said to be made of natural fibre composite materials, among others. There’s also some recycled carbon fibre content. Compared with the 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport, the flared fenders allow more room for wider 18-inch racing tyres from Michelin.
