The 5th gen (W206) Mercedes-Benz C-Class lineup has now got the AMG C 43 variant—available in saloon and estate bodystyles. And as you might have guessed, the combustion engine has been boosted with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, which we’ll talk about in just a minute or two. In the meantime, let’s take a brief look at other key highlights.
Speaking of which, you get the AMG-specific visual stuff such as the Panamericana grille, 18-inch AMG light-alloy wheels (up to 20-inch are optionally available), diffuser-like insert on the rear bumper, and circular tailpipes.
You also get AMG sports braking system with discs measuring 370 x 36 mm at the front gripped by 4-piston fixed calipers and 320 x 24 mm at the rear gripped by single-piston calipers; AMG Ride Control suspension with Adaptive Damping System; rear-axle steering, and AMG exhaust system with changing noise level depending on the drive mode.
Inside, you’ll find AMG seats upholstered in a combination of Artico man-made leather and Microcut microfibre with red contrasting stitching; AMG Performance flat-bottom steering wheel in Nappa leather, and AMG-specific graphics and displays in the MBUX infotainment system. The AMG Track Pace data logger is also integrated, which records more than 80 vehicle-specific data such as speed, acceleration, steering angle and brake pedal actuation 10 times per second while the car is being driven around a race track.
Moving on to the business end of the story, the new AMG C43 is powered by a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine (M139) combined with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that offers a 10 kW (14 metric hp) temporary power boost depending on the situation. The ICE pumps out 300 kW (408 metric hp) at 6750 rpm and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque at 5000 rpm. Compared with the previous-gen C 43, there are 18 horses more while the torque is down by 20 Nm.
A 9-speed automatic transmission distributes the output to all four wheels via 4Matic AWD system. The official 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time is 4.6 seconds while the top speed is limited to 250 km/h (155 mph).
