An electric scooter from the future.
BMW Motorrad has revealed the production version of the Definition CE 04 we saw in November 2020. The production version is simply called CE 04, and is scheduled to go on sale in European markets from spring 2022. Prices in Germany start at €11,990 (including VAT).
The production version doesn’t look all that different compared to the Definition CE 04, which is a good thing. The scooter retains all the key features such as LED headlights with integrated running lights, a 10.25-inch instrument display, side storage, and of course, the sci-fi movie looks. In case you’re wondering where the F are the taillights, well, the near-production prototype had proposed some kind of discreet taillights. Which means, it didn’t really have any. In the production version, however, those lights above the licence plate double as both turn signals and taillights.
Suspension duties are handled by a telescopic fork at the front, while the rear has a single-sided swingarm. Braking duties are handled by twin discs at the front and a single disc at the rear. ABS comes standard, while the buyers can go for the optional ABS Pro with banking capability. The 15-inch front and rear wheels are wrapped with 120/70 and 160/60 sized tyres, respectively.
The CE 04 is powered by a permanent magnet electric motor mounted in the frame between the battery and the rear wheel. It develops a max output of 31 kW (42 metric hp) at 4,900 rpm and a max torque of 62 Nm (46 lb-ft) between 0-4,900 rpm. The scooter is claimed to do 0-50 km/h (31 mph) in 2.6 seconds, while the top speed is limited to 120 km/h (75 mph).
An 8.9 kWh lithium-ion battery pack is estimated to offer a range of up to 130 km (81 mi). With the standard 2.3 kW charging cable, the battery pack is claimed to take 4 hours and 20 minutes to get juiced up, however, with the optional 6.9 kW charger, the charging time is claimed to come down to 1 hour and 40 minutes.
The scooter comes with ASC (Automatic Stability Control) as standard, which limits the torque depending on the rear wheel slip. The Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) which is claimed to offer even more safe acceleration, especially in banking position, is optional.
BMW is also selling an optional €990 ‘Connect GTX’ jacket with active lighting on the back and sleeves. It even comes with a smartphone charging pocket.
