The new MC20 supercar is scheduled to make its debut in September this year. Before that happens, Maserati has decided to reveal its heart—a brand new, in-house developed 3.0L V6 twin-turbo engine, christened ‘Nettuno’. The name translates to Neptune and appears to be derived from Roman mythology.
The new powerplant has a V90° architecture and dry-sump lubrication. Main features of the engine include F1-derived pre-chamber combustion system (also known as indirect injection/precombustion chamber) with twin-spark plugs. A lateral spark plug acts as a support (backup) to ensure constant combustion when the engine is operating at a level that doesn’t need the pre-chamber to kick in. Chief engineer Matteo Valentini offers a bit more insight into the new engine below –
According to Maserati, the idea was to have a ‘100% Made in Modena’ car starting right from its engine. As for the technical specifications, the new Nettuno pumps out 463 kW (630 hp) at 7500 rpm and 730 Nm (538 lb-ft) of torque between 3000-5500 rpm. The engine revs up to 8000 rpm.
The MC20 supercar will make its debut with the new powerplant at the ‘MMXX: The time to be audacious’ event in Modena in September 2020. Meanwhile, check out some photos of the Nettuno below.
