Mercedes-Benz and NVIDIA are planning a collaboration to develop a new automated driving architecture based on NVIDIA’s DRIVE platform. If all goes as planned, it’ll be rolled out for the next-generation Mercedes-Benz vehicles starting in 2024, enabling them with upgradable automated driving functions.
The DRIVE – a lineup of platforms designed for automated driving and robots, gets a new system-on-a-chip (SoC) called Orin, which consists of 17 billion transistors. According to NVIDIA, the Orin is designed to handle large number of applications and deep neural networks that run simultaneously in autonomous vehicles and robots, while achieving systematic safety standards.
NVIDIA and Mercedes-Benz are planning to jointly develop the AI and automated vehicle applications that include SAE Level 2 and Level 3 capabilities, as well as automated parking functions (up to Level 4). In the future, it’ll be possible for a car to be updated over-the-air to enable new automated driving functions.
